How Do You Approach SEO Leads?

Use varied forms of communication for different types of SEO leads

Acquiring SEO leads

Not sure if we’ve made this clear—or rather, make it clear—in our weekly blogs that SEO leads are not made alike. So, how you approach the prospect depends on how you acquired them as leads. Acquiring SEO leads is a lot like acquiring new friends: You meet them in an assortment of places. For instance, there are times when the prospect fills out a form on your website, and there are times when you identify a prospect and would directly reach out to them.

Typically, there are four different kinds of SEO leads:

  1. Inbound SEO leads; referred by a common connection
  2. Inbound SEO leads; reaching out directly to you
  3. Outbound SEO leads potentially seeking out agencies
  4. Outbound SEO leads not seeking out agencies

Inbound leads referred by a common connection

Communication is really the key here, and if your communication is over email, continue the communication already set by your prospect or your connection in their inbound communication. Answer their questions as eloquently as possible and be realistic about expectations in terms of when they’ll see results. Don’t lie. Lying is bad. Duh.

Inbound SEO lead reaching out directly

The worst thing you could do when trying to acquire SEO leads is to let emails slip through the cracks. The time it takes for you to reply to an inbound query is extremely critical. And don’t you even think about automated email replies—those are just an affront to personal responses and are a slap in the face to your prospect. Seeing as assault, physically or figuratively, won’t get you a callback, just nix the automated responses. A great way to keep from missing inbound queries is to set unique email alert tones on your smartphone so you can respond to inquiries immediately.

Outbound SEO leads seeking agencies

Phones usually work best in this scenario. Depending on the niche of the business you are reaching out to, you likely won’t find a business owner checking his or her email frequently. So, make sure you pick up the phone and speak to them directly. It will always behoove you to do so,.

Outbound SEO leads not seeking an agency

We never recommend cold calling for SEO prospects. It’s just not professional and can become a huge waste of time and manpower. So, if you’re thinking about seeking out SEO leads that aren’t seeking you—stop, take a good look in the mirror and think of a better idea.
